Half of TX Abortion Clinics Close Due to Safety Standards

Mary McLaurin

Since Governor Rick Perry signed a major anti-abortion law in 2013, half of the Lone Star State’s abortion clinics have permanently shut down. Although that law may eventually be ruled on by the Supreme Court, it has already had such a significant impact on Texas that the court’s final say likely won’t matter much.

In 2011, Texas was reportedly home to over 40 abortion clinics. Over the last three years, however, that number has been cut in half; there are now only 20 open, according to a report by the National Journal.

Rare Earthquake Warning…in Oklahoma

earthquake

Mile for mile, there are almost as many earthquakes rattling Oklahoma as California this year. This major increase in seismic shaking led to a rare earthquake warning today (May 5) from the U.S. Geological Survey and the Oklahoma Geological Survey.

In a joint statement, the agencies said the risk of a damaging earthquake — one larger than magnitude 5.0 — has significantly increased in central Oklahoma.

Pelosi: Honor Cinco De Mayo By Passing Amnesty

Nancy Pelosi

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said House Republicans on Cinco de Mayo should be as courageous as the Mexican militia that defeated the French army in the Battle of Puebla to pass amnesty legislation.

Pelosi, who has said that passing amnesty legislation would be more important to her than becoming Speaker again, said “the time is now for comprehensive immigration reform” and for “House Republicans to emulate the bravery demonstrated in the Battle of Puebla, recognize the importance of immigrants and family unification, and give us a vote on a comprehensive bill that reforms our broken immigration system.”

Obama’s ‘Year of Action’: Golf, Dinners, Fundraisers and More Golf

State of Union

Had you noticed we were enjoying a “Year of Action”? Are you enjoying it?

On Saturday President Obama enjoyed his 11th golf outing of the year before heading off to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Today the president meets with President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti and then hosts a Cinco de Mayo reception in the Rose Garden. Later this week, the President will attend four Democratic fundraisers in California.

But perhaps the clearest sign of the “Year of Action” is in the results.

Ukrainian Jews Prepare for Emergency Evacuation

Odessa’s Jews are prepared to evacuate should the violence in the western Ukrainian city get significantly worse, several community leaders told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday.

Odessa’s Jewish community numbers some 30,000, down from nearly 40 percent of the city’s population before the Holocaust.

Running street battles between pro-Russian and nationalist forces claimed dozens of lives in the Black Sea port this weekend, culminating in the burning of dozens of pro-Russian protesters in the city’s trade union building on Friday evening.

Palin to Obama: You Lied Again on Benghazi

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin blasted the Obama administration for lying about the Benghazi attacks last week again and praised House Republicans for deciding to form a Select Committee to try to unearth what led to the deaths of four Americans and the possible cover-up.

Last week, Judicial Watch released emails it obtained through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) that revealed that White House national security official Ben Rhodes sent an email to administration officials to emphasize that the attacks occurred because of an “internet video” and not because of broader policy failures.

Double Whammy: GOP Demands IRS Special Counsel

Not only are House Republicans forming a select committee to investigate Benghazi, there is now a concerted push from top GOP officials for the appointment of a special counsel on the IRS scandal.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) introduced the IRS scandal special counsel resolution on Friday. Jordan’s resolution calls on Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint an independent counsel to investigate the IRS scandal, rather than the current Department of Justice attorney investigating. The current DOJ investigator donated thousands of dollars to President Obama’s re-election campaign and to the Democratic National Committee.

Anti-Amnesty Pledge Dividing GOP

Conservatives are pressuring Republicans to sign a pledge stating their opposition to key components of President Barack Obama’s immigration reform agenda, The Hill reported.

The pledge – sponsored by the Federation for American Immigration Reform Congressional Task Force – is already affecting primaries across the country, due in part to conservative syndicated radio talk show host Laura Ingraham. She is keeping track of candidates and members of Congress who sign the pledge.

“If you don’t sign this pledge, then you’re not someone who believes in true border enforcement and you’re someone, apparently, who trusts the Obama administration to implement immigration reform,” she said, according to The Hill.

Krauthammer: Benghazi Emails Akin to Discovery of Nixon Watergate Tapes

The discovery, over a year after the September 11, 2012 terror attack in Benghazi, of an e-mail from a White House political operative that shows him suggesting that former United Nations ambassador Susan Rice underscore that the attack was a reaction to an Internet video is, according to Charles Krauthammer, like the discovery of the Nixon tapes that blew open the Watergate scandal in 1973.

“It’s to me the equivalent of what was discovered with the Nixon tapes,” Krauthammer said Thursday. “The point is that Republicans have done a terrible job in building the case. Even today I have to say, the questioning was disjointed, it was not organized. If they had appointed a special committee [a] long time ago the way it was done in Watergate, you would have had answers on this and the country wouldn’ be tired.”
